10 Best Baby Books For New Parents

I guess the topic of best baby books never comes up until you have your first baby, right?

And then it’s ON like Donkey Kong.

Especially when it’s your first-born.

Becoming A First Time Narrator

Suddenly, the idea of reading aloud in the calmest, yet silliest voice we can becomes totally appealing. We would NEVER read aloud to our spouses at all, never mind with a silly voice. Yet, here we are, talking away to our new bundles of joy with goofy smiles on our faces.

We were a little late to the party when it came to reading books to our baby. Instead, we waved some black & white flash cards in front of our baby son. Every time he smiled at the black & white jellyfish, we were convinced he would be some sort of oceanographer!

Studies Have Shown

Of course, numerous studies have been done regarding the benefits of reading to your baby. Even if you don’t care about brain development, you have to agree that having some QT with your new munchkin and a story is pretty cool.

We thought we would compile a top 10 hits for our best baby books. Some will make you laugh and some will make you cry. Some will maybe even take you back to the time when your Mom or Dad read to you. (Just click any of the book images to take you to purcahse them on Amazon)

#2 Goodnight Moon

OK this one is bound to take you back to childhood. I’d be willing to wager that this book found its way into the majority of US households over time. This short, but loving read has been a long-time favorite and one of the best baby books of all time.

#3 The Very Hungry Caterpillar

While we’re on the topic of reminiscing, my personal favorite is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. What can I say? Any book that allowed me to get involved and look a little different than most is a winner in my eyes.

Our children have loved this book so much that we’ve almost worn holes through it because of the interaction required. Babies and kids alike are mesmerized by the ‘cause and effect’ style throughout.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site #5 Best Baby Book

#5 Goodnight Construction Site

Sherri Duskey Rinker is a best-selling childrens book author for good reason. I don’t know much about iambic pentameter, but there’s something very hypnotic about this book. I never thought it was possible to drift off to sleep, while listening to stories about forklift trucks, but now I’ve been proven wrong.

Dear Zoo #6 Best Baby Book

#6 Dear Zoo

Probably the most frequently read book in our household between the ages of 0-4. Again, child interaction and getting to flip cards over to do the big reveal was always a hit. Dear Zoo has to be one of the best baby books ever written.

This book is great for vocal kids with great memories. With Eric Carle’s signature illustration, As Brown Bear unfolds through all the favorite animals there are until its end. Don’t be surprised if your child starts to speak some words while reading this after a while.

Parent who want a good laugh should buy this book. Kids will scream with laughter at the irony of the story and adults will adore this refreshing read too.

#9 Pout Pout Fish

This is another sing-along book. For some reason, parents tend to whip out a variety of voices they never knew they had and kids find the narrative hilarious. It's also nice to see all the different shapes and sizes of ocean animals.
